Safely storing and securing your keys should be important to anyone — whether you are a homeowner looking for a simple solution to store your spare keys or a small business owner trying to safely track and manage your many key sets.  Key organizers can help make your life easier and safer.

Losing your keys can be costly.  If you’re a homeowner it’s always a good idea to change your locks when one of your keys goes missing.  If you’re a small business owner and you lose a key, it’s even more expensive — and you’ve got the additional problem of worrying about employee theft.

That’s why key organizers are so important.  Keys are kept in a safe location and stored in an orderly fashion.  The days of trying to stuff everything into a drawer or haphazardly around the house and office will be behind you.

There are several different types of key organizers — what you choose will depend upon your needs.  A business may need something as fancy as an electronic key cabinet which locks individual keys and requires electronic authorization.  A home may only need something as simple as a wall-mounted key rack.  We’ll cover many of these items here with our goal being helping you decide which type of organizer is right for you.

Simple and Inexpensive Organizers
Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest.  This can certainly be the case for a homeowner who is just wants to keep their spare keys secure, or to hide a spare in a safe location.

For the latter, have a look at magnetic key cases.  These inexpensive little items can usually store one or two keys and you can hide them out of plain sight.  It is always a good idea to be creative with a hiding spot, though.

For in-home key organizers, start with a simple key rack for all your key chains.  Mount it to the wall and hang your key chains so you always know where you’ve set them.

Next, have a look at a locking key cabinet.  This simple storage box fastens to the wall.  It has an external lock, and swings open.  Inside, you’ll find lines of hooks to hang your keys on.  You can find these units in many sizes, depending on your needs.  Generally these includes labeling mechanisms.

Mid-Range Options
Wall mounted mechanical solutions for small businesses can store dozens to hundreds of keys.  Many come with simple key rings as well.

If you’re a small business or a homeowner looking for a bit more secure solution, you can get a key organizer steel cabinet.  The steel makes the cabinet much more difficult to break into, and when combined with a good external lock your keys will be quite safe.

High-Security Key Organizers
Many businesses, and even some homes, require top of the line security in their key organizer.  This can include electronic authorization for access to the keys, and even biometrics.  These key control cabinets can include software to administer them and electronic reports of all access to the keys.

High-end security key organizers can cost thousands of dollars and can secure hundreds and even thousands of keys.

One thing I try to remind people when they ask me about home and business security is exactly what they stand to lose if they don’t do things the right way.  Let’s examine some of the myriad costs you could incur by not securing your keys.

1)  Stop replacing your locks.
Whether you’re a home or business owner, losing keys often means changing your locks.  For a homeowner trying to raise a family, the costs of replacing your locks can really be a pain — and if you aren’t properly organizing your keys it can happen again and again.  The sooner you buy a key organizer, the more money you’ll be saving in the long run.

For a business owner, replacing the locks on your building can mean thousands of dollars down the drain.  An electronic key organizer is a one-time purchase that can literally save you thousands of dollars in recurring costs.

2)  Key Organizers Save You Time
Stop wasting your precious time searching for your keys.  In the modern world we are all constantly on the go and no one has time to wasting rummaging around for lost keys.  Key organizers can be purchased for as little as twenty dollars — isn’t that worth all the money you’ll save on Advil?

3)  Stop Having to Monitor and Worry About Your Employees
One of the biggest problems small businesses have is finding good help.  Often it is extremely difficult to find good people you can trust.  With a key organizer, you can make your employees accountable for the keys they take and the property those keys and locks protect.  It’s valuable piece of mind.

4) Make Your Schedule More Efficient
How many times do you have you ever had to leave work to let a relative, contractor, or neighbor have access to something in your home?  How much time could you be saving if you could still control access to your home, at times of your choosing, but not have to make that trip from work to home?  With certain types of key organizers, you can have the ability to remotely unlock that device to allow access to your keys.  This will save you time — and as we all know — time is money.
